Adobe Camera Raw, Adobe Photoshop Lightroom

Lightroom 3.3 and Camera Raw 6.3 available

Last night Adobe released the updates for Lightroom 3.3 and Camera Raw 6.3. If you have earlier versions already installed, you can update them using the internal update mechanism, or you can download them here.

These releases add new lens profiles, raw support for new camera models and a number of perfromance improvements and bug fixes. The updates are recommended for all photographers using the software.

Adobe has also released a new Lens Profile Downloader that allows you to install profiles for a wide range of SLR lenses. Lens profiles correct distortion, vignetting and chromatic aberration specifically for the lens used to make the capture. For more on lens profiles and to get the downloader visit Adobe Labs.

  1. Nat, I thought the profiles would be entirely lens specific. The Adobe downloader speciifies profiles by lens and camera model. Why would lens profiles for a 1DsII, 1DsIII, or 5dII be different???

  2. Bill – great question. In my understanding the reason there would be different profiles based on lens body is in the way the camera stores EXIF metadata about the lens used. For example, I used to have a Tamron 18-200 XR Di II. I used that lens to shoot on three different bodies – Canon 10D, 30D and 40D. In the EXIF metadata for shots from each of the cameras, the lens has different names. Actually, on captures from the 10D it just says 18-200mm, no brand or anything, so the Lens Profile panel can’t automatically match up a lens at all.

    I don’t know for sure how the three models you listed may differ in their recording of EXIF lens data, but I suspect you’re right that in practice the characteristics of the captures themselves will be very similar (if not identical) between the 1DsIII and 5DII. (The 1DsII mgiht be different, though…)

    To that point, there is a distinct possibility that between camera models (even those using the same sensor) that the image circle will be different due to variation in the distance between the back lens element and sensor. In this case, the different lens profiles would actually contain different corrections.

    I’m glad to see that Adobe is producing and releasing lens profiles for different body/lens combinations because it’s the only way to know for sure that the corrections are ideal.
